As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re hearing from the many apprentices completing a range of courses and levels here at Protocol.

In this blog, we’re talking to Sam who is completing a Level 4 Marketing Executive Apprenticeship.

  1. Why have you chosen to do an apprenticeship?

I liked the fact that I could learn at my own pace, both in and outside of work, and that the course was tailored to Protocol. It’s a fantastic way to gain a very valuable qualification while still contributing to my role at Protocol.

  1. Why did you choose the course that you did?

I’ve worked in marketing for a number of years, but I’ve never had the chance to pick up a formal qualification. When the opportunity to do an apprenticeship at Protocol arose and to get on the ladder with my CIM (Charted Institute of Marketing) I jumped at it.

If you’re trying to put yourself through the CIM it can cost thousands of pounds so to do this through with Protocol for free was fantastic! And even though I’ve worked in marketing before, I’m still learning a great deal about marketing that I didn’t know which is fantastic!

  1. What aspects of your course do you enjoy most?

I like the blended learning style of the course. The course is spilt between online sections of practical tasks and learning and in person discussions and workshops (at our Nottingham Head Office) with my assessor Kat. The tasks can be related to projects I’ve done or am intending to do at Protocol and this has been really valuable!

  1. How have Protocol supported you during your course?

Everyone at Protocol has been fantastic. My manager Laura has given me the time and flexibility to spend time on my learning where I need it and I really appreciate that!

I’m just really thankful that I got the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship and upskill because gaining my CIM is always something I’ve wanted to do by never had the chance too!

  1. Where will your course take you?

The Level 4 is just the beginning, I hope. Ultimately, I want to go on to complete a level 7 qualification so that I can continue to progress in my Marketing career. I’ve worked in Marketing for 5 years now and I’m really excited for my future in Marketing with Protocol.

  1. What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying an apprenticeship?

If you have a chance to complete a funded apprenticeship absolutely go for it! If you have a supportive workplace there really is no reason not too! And don’t forget, apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers – you can complete one at any stage of your career and they will still add value. I’m learning a lot about marketing that I didn’t know, even though I came into the course with a background in marketing.
