The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory, with a full internal self-government, it covers a land area of 4700 square miles (12,000 square kilometres) and a coastline estimated at 800 miles (1,300 km). The archipelago consists of two main islands: West Falkland and East Falkland, and about 776 small and very small islands, mostly uninhabited. The Falkland Islands are a small, thriving, self-sufficient community with a British way of life, benefiting from excellent local services, beautiful scenery and the glorious absence of traffic jams!
The Islands are home to a fascinating and abundant rage of wildlife, such as five different species of penguin, seals, whales and dolphins – all of which can be observed from the shore! The vast, unspoiled, natural landscapes are also home to over 400 species of plant and bird life.
The capital, Stanley, is one of the smallest capitals in the world and is home to three quarters of the population. The Islands offer something for everyone, whether it be as an individual or a family. There are a range of activities and hobby clubs, as well as a fully-equipped leisure centre and gym! As well as all the usual amenities, such as a hospital, bank, fuel-station, post office and a library.
The area outside of Stanley is called ‘Camp’ (from the Spanish word campo meaning countryside). Whether you are an outdoor adventurer, budding photographer or simply love nature, then this unspoilt landscape offers it all.
The Islands have two flights a week from the UK and one to Chile, and is looking forward to the opening of a second South American link to Brazil beginning in November this year.
Through their own efforts, their economy allows Islanders to enjoy a comprehensive health service and education provision, with Falkland Islanders studying their A-Levels and degrees overseas, paid for by the FIG. This is a testament to how important education is, and how greatly it is valued by the community.
The Education Department is responsible for the provision of education throughout the Islands and provides this key service through its modern Primary and Secondary schools based in Stanley, and its Training Centre which ensures that Life Long Learners are also catered for. Education in Camp is provided through small settlement schools, and via Travelling Teachers. Older children from Camp attend school in Stanley and board at Stanley House, which is a bespoke residence built for this purpose, and has served as a surrogate home to hundreds of children since it opened in 1982.
Settlement and Travelling Teachers received support from the ‘Camp Education Unit’ based in Stanley. This unit conducts individual lessons through our IT systems and sets homework for children between Travelling Teachers’ visits. The education systems are based on what are used within the United Kingdom, and use English teaching methods and examination systems.
As the largest employer on the islands, the government offer many unique and fulfilling job opportunities across all areas of public service. Their responsibilities include those typically managed by central government, such as taxation, legislation and policy, as well as those usually managed on a local level such as town planning, health and social services, and education.
Further detail about the islands and the Government can be found on the FIG website.
