To support their progress, the College needs an innovative and dynamic strategic leader to shape and develop how they best use their MIS and IT resources to generate business intelligence to support the very best decision making, drive efficient curriculum planning, and optimise funding – and to continue to innovate and support their teachers and students to achieve ‘Excellence’. This is a new role and will be an important member of the Senior Leadership Team.
The successful candidate will be a proven MIS and IT leader, an expert in FE funding who can demonstrate innovative approaches to simplify and transform existing systems and merge new ILR’s. This appointee will use IT and MIS creatively to drive forward business across a multi-campus college, stretching over a large geographical area. The College are not looking for a ‘data cruncher’ but seek an energetic leader of a large team, who really does see the bigger picture!
We are looking for somebody who will bring a new strategic capacity to develop and improve delivery and quality across the college. You will have the agility and adaptability to work at pace, having gained experience and built a track record of success working in a Good or Outstanding College(s)
We want a lot from you; including a proven track record of success with data, curriculum planning, funding in 16-18 19+ and Apprenticeships. Drive, ambition, motivation, with clear communication and transformational leadership skills are essential to make a quick impact, as is an ability to work effectively and closely with the Director of Quality.

Sunderland College offers one of the region’s largest range of school leaver, adult and higher education courses, as well as programmes for international students. The college has strong links with businesses, both regionally and nationally, and offers a range of employer-focused courses, including apprenticeships and bespoke training programmes.
Sunderland College has four main campuses, including three in the city and one in Washington, and teaches more than 13,500 students each year. Bede Campus is home to Sunderland Sixth Form, a hub of academic excellence, offering over 30 A-level subjects and the largest Sixth Form provider in the city. It is also home to the impressive Arts Academy delivering visual and performing arts alongside exclusive NextGen VFX courses, with a 194-seat theatre, dance and drama studios and recording studios. The neighbouring Sports Academy boats sports science labs and multi-purpose sports hall, fully-equipped fitness suite and the Elite Sport Development Centres for Cricket and Men’s and Women’s Football.
The college opened City Campus, a flagship £29m vocational campus, in 2016 which delivers courses in engineering, manufacturing, construction trades, automotive trades, travel and tourism, hair and beauty, and catering and hospitality. The campus is home to an 80 cover restaurant, a luxury spa, salon and barbers, bakery, garage, aircraft fuselage and £750k specialist engineering facilities.
The college has held a 99 per cent pass rate for the past eight years and has been awarded the matrix Standard, the national quality mark for advice and guidance, five times in a row. The college recently achieved a silver award in the newly-launched Teaching and Excellence Framework (TEF) in recognition of the quality teaching experience given to higher education students, putting it alongside the likes of Durham, York and University College of London.
Sunderland College has an excellent track-record in apprenticeships and is in the top quartile nationally of all colleges delivering apprenticeships for quality. Ninety five per cent of their apprentices remain in employment at the end of their apprenticeship, and the college currently supports over 600 businesses and more than 1,300 apprentices.
A recent study demonstrated that the college has an impressive impact on the local and regional economy, and highlighted the following key points:
- Every £1 learners pay for their education, yields £4.90 in higher future wages, a return on investment of 16.9%
- £444.5m additional income per year to the local business community
- Accumulated contribution of former learners to the regional economy equates to £401m added income a year
- Society benefits from an average annual return on investment of 19.6% – for every £1 invested, society receives £5.90
