Winstanley College is an award-winning college and is amongst the country’s highest performing Sixth Form Colleges. We are Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ in all aspects and are ambitious to be even better. To complete our team, we seek to appoint a Deputy Principal to relentlessly focus on making further improvements, no matter how large or small, to all aspects of our curriculum.
We consistently enroll c. 1,850 students from across the North West who really enjoy our positive working and learning culture and environment, and who go on to achieve very successful student outcomes. Nearly all students leave here with their chosen qualifications and follow excellent progression routes to university, apprenticeships, and work. We are financially stable, with a vibrant campus and we feel this makes us a post-16 learning establishment of first choice, and a destination employer.
Our Deputy Principal will be a Senior Postholder and Nominee and will bring new ideas and aspiration to complement our existing high levels of drive and ambition for our students, and a proven exceptional track record of leading large academic teams to success.
You will play a key leadership role in delivering our future Teaching and Learning Strategy, where innovation is crucial in driving forward further improvements in our wide curriculum offer. You will have worked in either a college or school setting where performance was consistently very high, or Outstanding. You will know immediately what good curriculum looks like, and how to make it better.
You may already be a successful Deputy within an educational setting seeking a new challenge. You may be a proven Vice Principal or Assistant Principal, Deputy or Assistant Head Teacher seeking a large-scale new experience. We are looking to appoint someone with the vision, confidence, skills, and energy to drive forward curriculum improvement. You will have a passion for, and strong track record in, delivering great learner outcomes and the ability to inspire students and staff to achieve their full potential. In return, we will give you further opportunity to develop in your quest to be a Principal in your own right.
Winstanley College has a rich academic heritage that dates as far back as 1661. The College enrolls c. 1850 students every year across a broad range of A levels and is developing an attractive range of associated complementary vocational programmes. Many subjects are over-subscribed. Student Achievement ranks amongst the country’s best and our students travel from across the North West to study here. Retention is high and nearly all students leave here with their chosen qualifications and follow many excellent progression routes to university, apprenticeships and work. We are proud and protective of our positive culture. Staff relationships are strong and we operate with clear lines of communication and transparency.
The College is in Orrell, just outside Wigan, and benefits from being within the North West LEP. Under devolution there are many good things happening in the North West, where Post-16 Education and Skills is recognised as key to the growing economy and will remain so as the region bounces back from the current Covid-19 pandemic.
Winstanley College is not all new build but is very well maintained (as far as budgets extend) and is a vibrant, safe place to study and work. The College continually reinvests in rebuilding or refurbishing its facilities, for example the Maths block, the sciences suites, the Psychology & Sociology building as well as the Library building, and our other facilities such as Sports are equally impressive. Like many other colleges in a similar position with a site more than 50 years old we continue to work towards securing more funds for further investment in our estate.
